Ten New Pink Wine picks with Class and Style

During the summer and fall months, dry rosé style wines are fantastic to serve with tangy cheeses, charcuterie platters, gazpacho, gourmet salads with fresh figs, cherries or strawberries with citrus-based vinaigrette, beet salad, shellfish, sashimi, tuna tartare tacos, fritto misto with citrus-based aioli, grilled salmon, chicken and veggie skewers, turkey burgers, and barbecued pork with fruit compote.
 
With this in mind, below is a list of my notes from ten of the top wines I tasted at the annual Rose Wine Competition organized by my fellow wine writer Bob Ecker. Not surprisingly, many of the gold medal-winning wines were made with fruit from Northern California. But there were also big winners from Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Texas, and Virginia. Martin Ray 2014 Rose of Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
Double Gold and Best of Show winner at the 2015 Rose Competition. Made with Pinot Noir grapes from selected sites in Russian River Valley, this expressive wine features lively notes of fresh raspberry, watermelon, blood orange, zippy acidity, and a vibrant blast of tartness on the long, refreshing finish. $20.
 
Inman Family Winery 2014 “Endless Crush” Rosé of Pinot Noir, OVG Estate, Russian River Valley
Made by talented winemaker Kathleen Inman with fruit from her family’s Olivet Grange Estate, this wine features sultry aromas of ripe red fruits, pink grapefruit rind, and mineral. On the palate, the flavors expand with brilliant notes of wild strawberry, plum, watermelon and fresh squeezed citrus. Overall, a pleasurable pink wine that is classy and sophisticated. $25.
 
Canyon Wind Cellars 2014 47-Ten Rosé, Riverside Vineyard, Grand Valley, Colorado
Sexy blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with bright notes of red cherry, strawberry, citrus, mineral, and a rustic hint of wild sage. The vineyard is located 4,710 feet above sea level and the slight oxidative character on the finish makes you think it is from the Old World. But alas, it’s from the isolated winegrowing region near Palisade, Colorado. Only 218 cases produced of this Double Gold winner. $13.
 
Lange Twins 2014 Sangiovese Rosé, Estate Grown, Lodi
Lovely sipper with a luminous pink hue and inviting aromas of rose petals, citrus blossom and ripe red fruits. The bright flavors are highlighted by notes of strawberry, red cherry, persimmon, citrus rind, crisp acidity, and a long dry finish. Stylistic, sophisticated and thirst-quenching—all in one glass! $15.
 
Renegade Wine Company 2014 Rosé, Columbia Valley
This playful Rhone-style blend of 50% Syrah, 21% Cinsault, 18% Grenache, 6% Counoise and 5% Mourvedre is made by the team at Sleight of Hand Cellars. The end result is a juicy wine with perky flavors of strawberry-rhubarb pie, raspberry, pomegranate, tangy acidity, and a lingering finish. Fun and generous. Plus, with 4,500 cases made, there’s enough to go around! $12.
 
Azur Wines 2014 Rosé of Syrah, California
At Azur Wines in Napa Valley, gifted French winemaker Julien Fayard has a passion for making his own version of the Provence-style rosé in the New World. His latest rendition is loaded with spicy aromas and complex flavors of white peach, raspberry, plum, exotic melon, pink grapefruit and white pepper. Tangy, delicious, and worthy of the Double Gold it received at this year’s competition. $28.
 
Chateau Morrisette Winery 2014 Vin Gris, Virginia
Fans of Virginia wines know that Bordeaux varietals are planted in special regions throughout the state. That is certainly the case around the city of Floyd, where 67% Cabernet Franc, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot are the important ingredients used to make this admirable dry and delicate new release of Vin Gris by Chateau Morrisette. In the glass, the pretty aromas of red berries, fennel and spice give way to radiant flavors of ripe raspberry, melon, tart cherry, racy acidity, and a plush finish. $17.
 
Moshin Vineyards 2014 Rose of Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
Crafted by veteran winemaker Rick Moshin and his family, this new release has lovely aromas of red core fruits enveloped by fresh rose petals mixed with wild herbs. The flavors follow through on the palate with bright notes of ripe strawberry, watermelon and plum. The end result is a graceful and elegant wine with a shimmering salmon hue. $22.
 
Cass Winery 2014 “Oasis” Rosé, Estate Grown, Paso Robles
This enchanting new blend of Syrah and Grenache from Cass Winery features bountiful flavors of wild berries, fresh watermelon, rhubarb, cocoa, white pepper, and a dry savory finish. In short, it’s a wine that makes you feel excited to take the next sip and so on until the bottle is empty and the palate is satisfied. $22.
 
Quady North 2014 “GSM” Rosé, Rogue Valley, Oregon
Made with Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, this soft, supple and spicy style of rosé shines with bright flavors of strawberry, cherry, plum, pepper, and wild herbs. Besides being a nice pleasant sipper, it’s a wine that can work wonders with fresh green salads with berries, gourmet sandwiches, appetizers, and fine medium cheeses—especially those from Oregon’s Rogue Valley. $15.
