Many tasting room visitors feel that they should rinse out their glass between tastes of wine. This really isn’t necessary - it dilutes your next taste and makes you look like an amateur.I learned from a winemaker many years ago that wine is more chemically like wine than water, and water just serves to dilute your next taste. Have a water back – drink it on the side!
Wineries usually put their wines in a certain tasting order for a reason. Usually the white wines will be listed in order from dry to sweet (Sauvignon Blanc to Riesling, for example) and the red wines (Pinot Noir to Cabernet Sauvignon, for example) will be listed from light bodied to heavier bodied.
It is always a good idea to drink plenty of water when you are wine tasting. You just don’t need to rinse out your glass.
