Wine Regions of Europe – Bosnia and Herzegovina
The horrible 1992-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina damaged much of the region’s viticulture and it still has not recovered. The Neretva Valley/Mostar region is the most important production region. Slightly more than half of all plantings are white grapes, especially the local Žilavka, which makes an aromatic, full-bodied wine. The region produces the acidic white Serbian grape Smederevka, as well as local whites Krkošija and Bena. Blatina is the local red, usually blended with Alicante Bouschet. Vranac and Cabernet Sauvignon are also produced.
